Sound Baths and Screen Time
Setting the tone before the hardest conversation to have with other parents.

A deep breath to start
Screen time is one of the trickiest topics parents talk about with each other. It pulls in identity, values, guilt, comparison, and a decade of “should haves” all at once. From the 100+ hours of parent interviews we’ve conducted, almost every parent has a story about a screen time conversation that went sideways: a playdate pickup that turned into a debate, a family text thread that got tense, a friend who said something they couldn’t shake.
So the question we kept asking when planning our April event with Mother Magazine was simple: how do you make space for a conversation that parents don’t often get to have openly with each other?
Relaxing with some breath work and a sound bath turned out to be an incredibly helpful way to kick off a conversation that is notoriously high emotion, high intensity, and can often be high consequence.
No two families are the same but the challenges with screens are
There were a range of perspectives in the room. Moms of eight-year-olds sitting next to moms of teenagers. Families with one kid, families with five. Approaches ranging from “no tech, period” to “we’re figuring it out on the fly.”
A few themes that showed up again and again:
Phones as an inflection point. Everything changes with phones.
The tools fall short. Even tech-savvy parents are struggling.
Modeling matters. Our screen time is part of theirs.
Many of the challenges shared came up almost word for word in our Moms Discuss Screen Time Video as well.
The more honestly we talk about our differing approaches and shared challenges, the stronger the foundation we build for our kids.
